This month marks 16 years.
This week marks the 16th anniversary of our business, Knowledge Quest. I can remember that day well, when my husband took hold of both of my arms, looked me square in the eyes, and said, “Terri, my love, you need to do this! I am 100% for you and think you will be an amazing business woman.”
That kind of support is special, I know. And yet, when it comes from our spouses (or parents, or siblings, or best friends), we often dismiss it and think to ourselves, “yeah, I know my husband believes in me, but does anyone else? Just because he thinks I’ll do great as a business owner doesn’t mean I will be.”
Right? Have you ever said these words to yourself…
Well, it’s been 16 years of riding this roller-coaster of emotions, product creation, marketing, and ultimately, a business that has been our sole income. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!
But there is one thing I wish I had done earlier, right from the get-go. And that is what I am sharing with you today, so that you won’t wait as long as I did. Doh!
Today, I want to share with you the #1 thing that has skyrocketed my company, but first, let me share with you a very short backstory so you can see how L.O.N.G. we waited before doing the thing we should have done right from the beginning.
We started Knowledge Quest in June of 2001. I knew nothing about business, technology, or marketing. But I had a product that I was pretty sure other people wanted too. So, I dove in. And the water was well… okay.
The early years
Within 2 years, our company was making 6-figures, which is awesome, right? Well, yes and no. You see, once you start making $100K or more in revenue, you typically can’t run the business by yourself anymore. We reached a crisis point in 2004 when I realized that I could not keep up with my own business. You see, I was not only running a business but also homeschooling 4 kids at the time. I had maxed out my bandwidth. I either needed to close the doors, hire an employee or two, or convince my husband to quit his job and help me out.
We opted for door #3. My husband quit his job and began helping me run the business. And yet, even with two of us now running it, the growth of the business plateaued at the end of that year and remained steady for the next decade. That’s right! For ten years, Knowledge Quest brought in the same amount of revenue (give or a take a few dollars) year in and year out.
It was enough to live on (modestly) once all the expenses were paid, so we didn’t complain. And yet, in my heart of hearts, I doubted myself. I didn’t believe I had what it took to grow the business to the next level. I didn’t believe I was an excellent business woman. Here’s where I got tripped up… I believed I was average, vanilla, nothing special, with nothing of real value to teach or share with anyone else.
How cruel the enemy can be!
Because no one is average, bland, or worthless! We have each been created with incredible insight, value, and worth. God has instilled in each of us a unique set of gifts and talents that can and should be used to bless the world, most especially the people immediately around us.
Don’t ever be fooled into believing that you are nothing special. You are God’s workmanship. A masterpiece!
And a vessel of potential energy.
The turning point
Something happened in 2014 that changed me and changed our business. That something was the #1 thing that has skyrocketed our business growth far beyond the plateau and ultimately, more than tripled our business revenue.
And that one thing is…
I began to sit at the feet of uber-successful business people and learn everything I could from them. And yes, I spent money to do so. Now, you have to understand something about me. I never spend money unless I think I will get a good ROI – return on investment. I need to see a no-brainer risk reversal policy, meaning that if I don’t think I can earn back at least the amount of money I paid in as a result of the program, then I can get my money back. Or if the teaching isn’t a good fit for me, then I can ask for a refund.
And here’s the thing… I’ve yet to ask for a refund. My husband and I have sat at the feet of big-hearted, generous, ridiculously successful entrepreneurs. We have learned and implemented their strategies. And our business has more than tripled!
Before 2014, we had one employee besides ourselves. Now we have 12. Our company has been growing steadily for 3 years. And now, the table has turned. I have people asking me what we did to move the needle of our business forward and cause it to grow so dramatically. And the answer is…
Mentorship. Education. Community.
