Have you heard these reasons before?
I read this question on a blog recently and it made me sit up and think for a few reasons. Here’s the gist of the question:
Would you rather have…
- 100 email subscribers
- 10,000 Facebook fans
- 100,000 views on your video
Wow, hard question, right?
Doesn’t everyone want their videos to go viral and get hundreds of thousands of viewers? And 10K fans on Facebook is a big deal. But there is a right answer to this question and it is… Door #3!
While 100 email subscribers may feel like a pittance, this is the best case scenario of the three options above and I’m going to give you 6 compelling reasons why.
1. It works!
Here’s a fun fact: Email marketing is 10 times more effective than social media marketing. Not only are your email subscribers likely to see your email, but your chances of having it read and considered are significantly higher than a Facebook post.
2. You have no control over social media.
Let’s use Facebook for our example. When you post something on your page, because of Facebook’s algorithm, only a small fraction of them will actually see it. Plus, that algorithm is constantly changing, which means that you don’t control your relationship with your fans; Facebook does.
With email marketing, you have the ability to reach all your subscribers by clicking the send button, something that is completely within your control.
3. Email must be considered in order to be filed or deleted.
Under point #1, I mentioned that email marketing is 10 times more effective than social media marketing, but I didn’t explain why. Here’s the thing… when people sit down to their computers, they spend approximately 50% of that time IN their email box. Each email is read or at least considered before it is filed or the delete key is pushed. Social media is different because nothing needs to be considered. Your finger can just scroll through oodles of posts until something catches your eye. Nothing needs to be dealt with on social media. But email does. This opportunity gives you 2-3 seconds to make an impression through the headline and first couple sentences of your email before the delete key sends it away. And yet, these 2-3 seconds provides you with 10 times the positioning and potential that social media does.
Am I bashing social media? No way! I love it for engagement and connecting and even for marketing, but it doesn’t yet hold a candle to the opportunity you have when you can get your message inside your ideal customer’s email box.
4. Your email may be valued and saved.
42% of all email in a person’s inbox is considered important or essential. One of the main reasons why is that the email box is used for more than correspondence. It has become a file cabinet for important notes, papers, and files. In fact, if someone is interested in your content, your email message may live in a person’s inbox for a long time as they come back to it multiple times to reread what you have written. Your email may be valued by your readers.
5. People love freebies.
That’s right. At the end of the day, people are still willing to give you their email address in exchange for a compelling freebie. Plus, the human soul loves connection, encouragement, and the opportunity to engage with experts in their field. And that’s you!
6. You can build relationships.
It’s difficult to build a relationship with someone if she reads one blog post or watches one video. But if you can connect with that person on a weekly basis by offering great content that is valuable for her circumstances or season of life, then you can make a difference in her life. And that’s what building a business is all about… making an impact by solving problems and offering solutions.
So, are you ready to grow your email list? Have you been putting this off for too long? Are you starting from square one? Great! Then you will love the next post when I will address…
