About Me

Running a business while homeschooling? Are you kidding me?

about me - TerriMy name is Terri. A little bit about me:

In the fall of 2015, I decided to switch up the topic of my blog. For over a dozen years, I had been blogging on homeschooling, and I was starting to run out of things to say. Also, while I am still devoted to homeschooling as I am still teaching my kids at home (going on 19 years!), my passion in life has shifted.

My passion is to help other homeschooling moms reach their desired success as business owners WHILE continuing to carve out important family time, which includes teaching their kids at home.

We are a rare but hearty breed, who still appreciate the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

As a business owner who also homeschools my kids, I receive messages all the time, both intentional and unintentional, that to be truly successful, we need to put our kids in school and work full time.

I disagree!

Despite working from home and being surrounded by my kids most of the day, my company, Knowledge Quest, Inc., has continued to grow and thrive for over 15 years. The secret to success is not throwing more time at your business. It’s learning to harness the time we do have, do focused work, delegate wisely, and then get back to our families.

The Purpose of this Blog

And that’s what this blog is here for… to show you how you CAN run a successful business AND successfully teach your kids at home. Life is just too short to sacrifice family time for mindless work.

Our work can and should be purposeful. Our family time can and should be intentional and meaningful. As homeschooling moms, we can bring home the bacon, teach our kids how to fry it up in a pan, and enjoy all of our moments without mom guilt, wife guilt, business owner guilt, or any other kind of guilt.

And I’m ready to show you how!

Here are some of my most popular blog posts, which can get you started along the road to exciting business growth without jeopardizing your precious family time.

People ask me all the time what I am currently working on, so let me share…

My Current Projects

I am re-launching my business course for homeschool mompreneurs. If the course is currently open for registrations, you can sign-up here; otherwise, you can get on the waitlist for the next opening.

I am also writing the fifth volume of A Child’s Geography, which does not yet have a name. It is the fifth book in a series that introduces the wonders of our world to grade school children. A Charlotte Mason style history and geography curriculum, this book gives children a flavor of the world without leaving home. Learning about our world has never been easier or more fun.

This book covers the region of Northern Europe, including Scandinavia, the UK, Ireland, and Iceland. I can’t wait to get it into your hands.

Here’s a little more about me and my background:

I grew up in the suburbs in a good family to hard-working parents. I went to public school and mostly hated it. Harassed and ill-treated in junior high, I fell in with some rough crowds in high school. Now, my childhood family is splintered by distance and interests. It seems that only a wedding or funeral brings us together. I want something different for my own family.

Todd and I met at summer camp. We know a lot of goofy songs that we sing in the evening to our children because of it. We’ve been married nearly 28 years. We live out in the country and homeschool our kids, all six of ’em at one point!

We weren’t planning to homeschool. It just happened through a series of seemingly random events. We’ve been at it now for 18+ years.

We both work from home too.

We didn’t plan that one out either, but here we are working and teaching alongside each other. Knowledge Quest, Inc. is now in its 16th year of operation. Todd and I also run a pet facility, which offers boarding, grooming, daycare, and training. We took over this business – Countryside Pet Resort and Spa – three years ago. We usually like working together.

Sometimes we argue over dumb stuff, like whether we should send labels through the laser jet or buy a separate label printer. Or whether darks and lights should be mixed when washed. (Psst… they shouldn’t!) Or whether pop-tarts are a nutritionally suitable breakfast food. (Nope, they are not!).

Our kids are growing fast. With two graduated and another two kids in high school, we realize how fast this time does fly. Those old people weren’t kidding. We’ve got another daughter in junior high and our youngest in 4th grade. 4 girls and 2 boys. We’ve got a ways to go still, but it is a fun and exhausting adventure. We continue to choose to homeschool despite the challenges and daily work load. It is the best choice for our family right now.

    • Thanks. I’m about ready to chop my hair short again. I keep trying to grow it out and it gets thicker rather than longer.

My family is cute, aren’t they? They are delightful too. I am so blessed.

I’m glad to hear that you are enjoying some of my old posts. I am making a commitment to myself to get back to weekly blogging starting tomorrow. 🙂
